New York City Tries to Ban Loud Motorcycle Exhausts

Vrooom that noisy motorcycle in New York once too often and the city could own it.
In a new bid to stem motorcycle noise, the New York City Council is set to pass a bill requiring all bikes to display tags that show they are certified by the Environmental Protection Agency.
No EPA tag, you get a ticket, without anyone having to prove the bike exceeded the 80-decibel limit set by the city’s noise regulations.
The new measure would let single officers on foot patrol ticket parked motorcycles.
Ah, America, the land of the free… Maybe if motorcyclists didn’t insist on the fact that “loud pipes save lives” and use that as excuse to fit excruciatingly loud exhausts, this legislation wouldn’t even be under consideration…
I am a great advocate of using defensive driving techniques to minimize the risk of being involved in accidents. To me, using an anti social measure such as loud exhausts will never solve anything other than to alienate the biker community even more.
Ah but I forgot, that’s what some people find attractive about motorcycling, the “rebel” image.
Me, I’m just grateful if I’ve got a bike I can get to work on…
