Ferrari never actually built a motorcycle, but if one bike deserves to wear a prancing horse it might be this one. In 1990 Enzo Ferrari’s son Piero gave bike builder David Kay “the approval to place the Ferrari badge on your motorbike,” and the fruit of his labor is this curious one-off which will be going under the hammer at auction later this month.
The bike took 3,000 hours to assemble from scratch and wears several trick details including logo-emblazoned cylinder heads, a wild looking steering damper and shift linkage, and “double curvature reverse cone megaphones” that according to Kay make “…noise like a Messerschmitt chasing a Spitfire.”
Unlike a certain computer-rendered Ferrari concept, Kay’s creation is real and rideable. And according to auction house Bonhams’ estimate, this motorcycle is expected to fetch in the neighborhood of $300,000 when it goes on the block on December 20th.
